As Americans prepare for the upcoming fall and winter seasons, a surge in respiratory viruses like influenza, COVID-19, and RSV is anticipated to result in significant hospitalizations. This season, vaccine advice comes from an unexpected source.
Previously, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) and its vaccine advisory committee were responsible for delivering vaccine guidance. However, this year marks a departure from tradition.
The transition occurred after a federal judge’s decision in March deemed that Health Secretary Robert Kennedy Jr. had unlawfully altered vaccine policy and improperly restructured the advisory committee. Consequently, the committee is currently in a state of legal uncertainty.
In response, leading medical societies have joined forces to create a unified front. They have stepped in to provide Americans with comprehensive recommendations on seasonal vaccines.
