Minneapolis police are dealing with a shooting incident near 15 East Grant Street. Multiple victims, including two police officers, have sustained injuries. The city has issued an alert urging residents to steer clear of the area as the situation continues to evolve.
Reports indicate a suspect is down. This is supported by scanner audio. A high-ranking official assured that the two injured officers are expected to recover.
The scene at Nicollet and Grant witnessed an unprecedented response from law enforcement. Officers from St. Louis Park, Edina, the University of Minnesota, the Minnesota State Patrol, transit police, and sheriff’s deputies from nearby areas quickly converged. Additionally, special agents from St. Paul’s ATF field division also arrived.
Authorities advise the public to avoid the area bordered by 12th Street, Franklin Avenue, Hennepin Avenue, and Third Avenue South.
Minnesota Gov. Tim Walz stated, “My public safety team is responding to a shooting that took place downtown Minneapolis this afternoon. State officials are on the ground to support local law enforcement, and we will share more details as they become available.”
FBI Director Kash Patel confirmed awareness of the incident and willingness to provide any resources needed to help local authorities.
The main focus of the police response centered on an apartment complex on Grant Street. Officers with long guns maintained a watchful presence, supported by armored SWAT vehicles situated at strategic points. Ambulances were stationed around the scene and towards downtown, with several stretchers visibly being brought out from the building. Some individuals appeared to have leg injuries; the conditions of others are currently unknown.
WCCO reporter Conor Wight observed a crowd nearby noting activity on the eighth floor of the complex, where residents were seen inside their units as police assessed the situation.
Witness Account
Abdiwakil Mohamed from south Minneapolis shared his experience. While driving on La Salle Avenue, he heard three gunshots, seemingly from a rifle. Noticing a police officer shot inside their vehicle, he described the officer slamming the gas and colliding with another car.
The shooter appeared to be firing from a nearby building’s high vantage point, targeting people on the ground, Mohamed recounted. He also saw an officer remove their bulletproof vest, checking for a chest wound. Soon, law enforcement officers arrived from every possible direction.
