On Thursday afternoon, a police-involved shooting in downtown Minneapolis resulted in multiple injuries, including to two officers. The Minneapolis Police Department confirmed the incident occurred near 15 E. Grant St. and that the area remains an active scene.
According to reports from KSTP-TV in St. Paul, several civilians died when at least six individuals were shot. Two of these individuals were police officers. One officer sustained a stomach wound while another was injured in the leg. As of 5:39 p.m. local time, one officer was undergoing surgery. The other officer’s injuries were not life-threatening. However, officials have not yet confirmed the number of fatalities or the conditions of all the victims as of 6 p.m. local time.
Video shared on social media depicted heavily armed police aiming rifles toward an apartment tower near the Minneapolis Convention Center. Authorities advised residents to avoid the Loring Park neighborhood, where the security response occurred amid one of Minneapolis’s most populated areas.
Reactions from Federal and State Officials
FBI Director Kash Patel stated on X, “FBI is aware of the shooting in Minneapolis involving law enforcement and our personnel are responding. We will offer any and all resources necessary to assist local authorities.” The ATF in St. Paul also posted on X, “ATF special agents are responding to what is being reported as an active shooter situation near East Grant St. and South Marquette in downtown Minneapolis.”
Governor Tim Walz responded on X, saying that his public safety team was actively dealing with the incident. State officials are on-site to support local law enforcement. Walz also expressed his gratitude for the efforts of law enforcement ensuring public safety, saying, “Minnesota is praying for our first responders.”
Minnesota House Speaker Lisa Demuth posted on X, “I am aware of reports regarding a shooting in downtown Minneapolis. I am praying for the victims of this heinous crime, and I’m incredibly thankful for the massive response of our brave law enforcement officers.”
