One individual has died, and several others faced injuries after a shooting incident in downtown Minneapolis on Wednesday. The casualties included two officers, according to officials.
The Hennepin County Medical Center reported treating seven people affected by the shooting, confirming one death among them. The city announced the occurrence at about 5:10 p.m. local time on social media, indicating police were actively responding.
The city of Minneapolis declared, “The Minneapolis Police Department is on the scene of a shooting in the area of 15 E Grant St. involving multiple victims, including two police officers.” The medical center mentioned that the conditions of the injured were not yet available.
Footage from NBC affiliate KARE portrayed a significant police presence, which included what appeared to be armored vehicles and officers in SWAT gear. Details concerning the number of wounded individuals and their conditions initially remained unclear.
A witness recounted an encounter with the incident to KARE following her descent to the lobby of a building. She heard gunfire and observed someone on the ground. “I just left the building immediately because I knew what was happening, so I didn’t want to be involved in that,” she explained. After exiting, she reported hearing 25 to 30 shots as officers entered. The scene was described as an apartment building by a KARE reporter.
Video from the ground illustrated police vehicles with lights and sirens engaged. Authorities urged people to avoid a substantial area of the city, incorporating Loring Park.
Minnesota Governor Tim Walz noted his awareness of the situation, expressing gratitude to the police for their active response. He acknowledged his public safety team’s deployment to the site. “Grateful to law enforcement actively working to ensure the safety of our neighbors in Downtown Minneapolis this afternoon,” Walz shared on X. “Minnesota is praying for our first responders.”
The Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives, based in St. Paul, stated they were responding to the scene. FBI Director Kash Patel also confirmed his agency’s involvement, ensuring readiness to provide necessary resources to support local authorities.
