College football often sees dominant programs maintain their stronghold, making it tough for less successful teams to rise to the top. However, this season could bring a fresh champion. Despite the Indiana Hoosiers’ victory last year, first-time national champions remain a rarity, yet anticipation grows for Oregon Ducks to claim the title.
In a poll by The Athletic featuring 18 coaches, the majority picked the Oregon Ducks, coached by Dan Lanning, to win. Oregon received six votes, the most of any team, while no other team garnered more than three. Notably, one coach abstained from voting due to confidence in his own team’s potential, as reported by Bruce Feldman of The Athletic.
I think this is the most wide-open race we’ve had in college football in such a long time. I’ll say Oregon. Dan Lanning has continued to get better and better, and this is the year he cracks through,an ACC offensive analyst commented to Feldman.
Central to Oregon’s high expectations is quarterback Dante Moore, who emerged as the leading candidate for the Heisman Trophy, collecting nine out of 18 votes. His nearest competitors received no more than four votes.
I’ll say Moore because he’s gonna have a lot of marquee games,a Big 12 team general manager said.
If Moore performs as expected and becomes a serious Heisman contender, Oregon will be well-positioned in their quest for a first national title. Historically, Oregon frequently enters the title race but encounters setbacks. Last season, their hopes were dashed against the Hoosiers in the College Football Playoff. Moore’s initial pass was intercepted, leading to a loss with a 56-22 score.
This year, insiders anticipate a different outcome for Oregon’s season, with hopes that they’ll finally secure a championship title.
