Lane Kiffin, who has not yet coached a game for LSU, faces a surge of attempts to ban the Tigers from the SEC due to his controversial recruiting methods.
Georgia Attorney General Chris Carr has called on SEC commissioner Greg Sankey to take strong actions against LSU if they include players who were contracted with NFL teams during the summer. ESPN reports that this follows a recent SEC rule prohibiting member schools from signing former NFL players. Violations could result in suspensions, fines, and loss of voting rights.
Carr expressed his commitment to ensuring compliance: ‘I’ll use all legal means necessary to make sure no SEC teams, especially LSU, are allowed to play former NFL players.’
LSU allegedly planned to sign tight end Dae’Quan Wright and defensive tackle Zxavian Harris, previously released by NFL teams. Carr emphasized college athletics should remain exclusive to college athletes and expressed gratitude for SEC’s fast response in maintaining this standard.
Several local judges have issued temporary restraining orders that enable NFL rookies who didn’t make rosters to return to college for a fifth year. Carr’s threat presents challenges for Sankey, especially after a Louisiana judge’s recent ruling that prohibits the SEC from penalizing teams for signing players previously with the NFL.
Thomas Castellanos, a former Florida State quarterback who attended Miami Dolphins’ rookie minicamp, has taken advantage of this situation. Failing to secure an NFL spot, he signed with Texas Tech last week. The SEC has yet to comment on the Louisiana judge’s decision or its future strategy concerning NFL players.
