Investigation Into Former NFL Reporter Dianna Russini’s Conduct at The Athletic

An internal investigation by The Athletic determined that Dianna Russini, a former NFL reporter, violated the company’s standards. Her relationship with Mike Vrabel, the New England Patriots coach, led to her resignation in April.

The nature of Russini’s relationship with Vrabel remains inconclusive. Vrabel accepted responsibility for his actions, but did not comment on the photos of him and Russini at a resort in Arizona. He began counseling and returned to the team shortly after stepping away during the NFL draft.

“We neither completed an investigation nor reached any conclusion about the nature of the full relationship between Vrabel and Russini, but the totality of the public photographs are enough to conclude a violation of company policy,” the report said.

Steven Ginsberg, executive editor at The Athletic, a New York Times-owned sports outlet, highlighted the importance of journalistic integrity. He communicated to staff that maintaining audience trust is critical. Mike Semel, editorial director for standards, conducted a comprehensive review of Russini’s work. This included examining 903 articles, 204 podcast episodes, and 77 videos.

Most of Russini’s work was unrelated to Vrabel, with only a few instances requiring editor’s notes for not meeting standards. Photos of Vrabel and Russini were taken in Arizona prior to NFL meetings, per the New York Post. Both are married, and the NFL did not investigate Vrabel’s conduct.

“Regardless of whether the relationship was romantic, it was a breach and should have been disclosed,” Semel remarked in the report.

Vrabel guided the Patriots to the Super Bowl, where they were defeated by Seattle. In his debut season, he was named AP NFL Coach of the Year.

Russini upheld her professionalism in her resignation letter, dismissing speculation about her relationship with Vrabel. Despite initial support from The Athletic, media commentary perpetuated unsubstantiated rumors.

“I refuse to lend it further oxygen or to let it define me or my career,” Russini stated.
