A recent study highlights a potential connection between popular weight-loss medications and male-pattern baldness. Researchers at NYU Langone Health indicate that GLP-1 drugs such as Ozempic, Wegovy, and Zepbound might exacerbate hair loss in men with a genetic predisposition to baldness. This study marks the first instance of genetic evidence associating GLP-1 activity with androgenetic alopecia, the most common form of hair loss among men.

Research Findings

Published on September 3 in the Journal of Investigative Dermatology, the study finds that men using GLP-1 medications face a 7% increased risk of hair loss. The research focused on the GLP1R gene, which naturally enhances GLP-1 receptor protein levels in the body. Researchers compared genetic markers associated with GLP-1 activity to those linked with androgenetic alopecia. They selected male-pattern baldness due to its well-understood genetic causes.

“Rapid weight loss, reduced calorie and protein intake, and nutrient deficiencies can trigger temporary shedding,” said Dr. Ahmed El Muntasar, a general practitioner. He noted that genetic predisposition might enhance this process through GLP-1 receptor activity. He emphasized that this potential connection is not a certainty but an important biological signal.

The study analyzed genetic data from over 31,000 men and women in the eQTLGen database and more than 205,000 men in another complex traits database. Most participants were white. Dr. Lynn Petukhova, senior investigator, stated that the findings might allow future screenings to assess hair loss risk before prescribing GLP-1 therapies.

Implications for Patients

While Dr. El Muntasar advises against panicking or stopping treatments, he acknowledges the importance of monitoring potential side effects. The relatively modest 7% increase offers a signal, not a definitive cause-effect relationship. Petukhova adds that these findings might support future preventative strategies against hair loss during GLP-1 treatments.

Understanding how GLP-1 pathways affect hair follicles and whether women are similarly impacted will require more research. As GLP-1 drugs gain popularity, identifying side effects and those at higher risk becomes vital. Androgenetic alopecia affects about half of white American men over 50, underscoring the need for continued investigation into these connections.
