A distressing event took place this week at the Jersey Shore when a young child fell from a popular boardwalk ride, prompting quick action from her aunt. The incident happened at Casino Pier’s Sky Ride in Seaside Heights, which is known for its chairlift-style transport. Reports from the Asbury Park Press noted the event occurred on Monday.
The 2-year-old girl fell around 7:40 p.m. before the Sky Ride began moving. According to NJ.com, she fell to the edge of the boardwalk and sand. While this was happening, a 3-year-old boy, who was with her and her aunt on the ride, remained seated. Staff at Casino Pier acted swiftly to stop the ride. Firefighters then used a ladder to help the boy safely disembark from the ride.
The ride operates approximately 10 to 12 feet above the boardwalk surface, as reported by the Asbury Park Press. Fire Chief Tim Farrell explained that the girl first landed on a platform near the chair before reaching the sand below.
Emergency services quickly assessed the girl after her fall. Both the girl and her aunt were taken to the Community Medical Center in Toms River for further medical evaluation.
Authorities have indicated that the ride was seemingly functioning correctly, with Casino Pier personnel promptly shutting it down after the fall. The New Jersey Department of Community Affairs, responsible for amusement ride inspections, is now investigating the incident, with no initial signs of any defects.
