Cam Skattebo’s debut NFL season with the New York Giants started promisingly but was cut short by a severe injury. He suffered an ankle injury that ended his season just as his performance was gaining attention in the league. Skattebo and fellow rookie Jaxson Dart displayed potential against leading teams, marking the beginning of a new era for the Giants.
Skattebo faced a dislocated ankle and an open fracture of the right tibia following a tackle by Philadelphia Eagles linebacker Zack Baun during their Week 8 game at Lincoln Financial Field. This incident led Skattebo to contemplate retirement only eight games into his career.
During an interview on “Up and Adams,” Skattebo shared, “Yeah, definitely,” when asked about considering retirement. “The first month was kind of like, ‘Damn, do I really wanna do this?’” The abrupt end to his season posed not only physical but mental challenges as Skattebo sought to recover and regain his form.
Reflecting on his college career at Arizona State, Skattebo had made a personal rule regarding his professional journey in the NFL: he would retire if he sustained a major injury. This rule was tested just seven games into his career, leading to moments of doubt and frustration.
Despite these obstacles, Skattebo regained his determination during his recovery period, stating, “I was able to sit at home for 14 hours a day, do absolutely nothing for weeks on end. So just finding who I was, finding my happiness, finding the person I wanted to be on and off the field. And I think that’s something that I’ve built over the last nine, 10 months.”
Heading into the 2026 season, Skattebo aims to return to form. He joins a backfield alongside players like Najee Harris, Tyrone Tracy, and Devin Singletary. The new offensive coordinator, Matt Nagy, plans to utilize a running back committee. Skattebo’s tenacity on the field remains evident as he strives for first downs and touchdowns, often carrying defenders along with him.
Throughout his rookie season, Skattebo amassed 410 rushing yards on 101 attempts, scoring five rushing touchdowns. He also made 24 receptions for 207 yards and two touchdowns across eight games.
