New York City Mayor Plans for Solemn 9/11 Anniversary

This year’s 9/11 memorial service marks Zohran Mamdani’s first as mayor of New York City. He acknowledges the solemnity of the moment and emphasizes the need to focus on those who were killed rather than politics.

It’s about those that were killed that day. It’s about their families. It’s about the lives that have been shattered. And when you go through the museum, you see in those portraits an entire city. You see the breadth of what makes this city New York, Mamdani said.

He aims to make September 11, 2026, a day of remembrance for the victims, marking 25 years since the attacks. Mamdani stresses that the city should unite in tribute to those who protected it.

That we gather together, not as individuals, but as New Yorkers, with love of that same city they sought to protect, Mamdani stated.

The mayor notes the importance of honoring the courage shown that day.

As illnesses related to 9/11 continue to affect many, there is public interest in the release of documents concerning the attacks. Mamdani supports transparency, announcing a significant fiscal allocation.

The fiscal year 2027 city budget dedicates $34.2 million to develop an online portal for 9/11-related documents.

If there are documents that we are able to release, I think that they should always be released, Mamdani stated.

He aims to address public concerns and make these records accessible and searchable.

Reflecting on historical challenges, Mamdani acknowledges past communication issues faced by emergency services on 9/11.

I think that our emergency services personnel deserve the best equipment, and I have been consistent about the fact that this is a place where we should have alignment at a federal level, at a state level, at a local level, Mamdani mentioned.

He advocates for optimal support for emergency responders who face danger head-on.

Addressing security measures, Mamdani discusses past anti-terrorism strategies involving surveillance.

I firmly believe that we can keep this city safe while also respecting the rights of the people of this city, Mamdani affirmed.

He reflects on past errors in judgment based on religious profiling and praises current NYPD efforts.

As the mayor of a prime terror target, Mamdani outlines his approach to managing credible threats.

The first thing I would do is sit down with my police commissioner and all of the top brass and work through exactly what the threat is, how we can ensure that it never materializes and how we keep New Yorkers safe, he stated.
