Seattle Mariners manager Dan Wilson faced an early exit in the sixth inning during Thursday’s game against the Athletics. The umpiring crew ejected him following a series of contentious events.
The situation began when Donovan Walton, a former Mariner and current Athletic, hit a 392-foot homer against his former team. Walton celebrated with a fist pump after rounding first base. Shortly after, Athletics catcher Brian Serven took a 92.3 mph cutter off his shoulder.
The umpires convened to discuss the incident after Vargas hit Serven. They decided to issue warnings to both dugouts. Wilson, confused by the events, stood on the top step of the dugout with his arms stretched out. Home plate umpire James Hoye issued an individual warning to Wilson. Hoye instructed, “Don’t even argue it. Don’t even come out, don’t even come out.” Wilson ignored the warning and approached the plate, resulting in his ejection before he could speak.
Questioning the Ejection
While Wilson was warned before his ejection, not everyone agrees with the decision. A’s commentator Dallas Braden voiced his objections, expressing the aggressive nature of the actions taken.
“The reason he wants an explanation is because Vargas hit Serven in the middle of the back with a slider,” Braden argued. “This guy is making his sixth appearance here in the big leagues, coming off of an injury, and now there are warnings for both teams.”
Braden highlighted that the Mariners, trailing in the game, had no interest in giving away baserunners. He noted that the Mariners’ fans shared this sentiment, vocalizing their dissatisfaction.
Game’s Importance for the Mariners
Entering Thursday’s game, the Mariners were four games away from the final Wild Card spot in the AL, and 5.5 games behind the AL West leaders, the Houston Astros. Their performance earlier in the season positioned them well in the American League playoff picture, but they had since fallen in the standings.
With limited opportunities to capitalize against less competitive teams, the Mariners needed every win they could secure. The series against the Athletics became critical for maintaining their playoff aspirations. The Mariners aimed to shift momentum in their favor with the second game of the series scheduled for Friday at 7:10 p.m. PT.
