Pro Football Hall of Famer and long-time “FOX NFL Sunday” co-host Terry Bradshaw recently discussed his experience with confronting mortality and deepening his Christian faith following two cancer diagnoses. He shared his thoughts on William Shatner and Melanie Shatner Gretsch’s “No Time But Now” podcast. The conversation comes ahead of his new memoir release.
Bradshaw questioned his readiness for the afterlife. “My thoughts were about dying. Am I going to heaven? Am I a good enough man? Have I been a good enough Christian? Have I been kind to people? Am I going to heaven?” he reflected.
Bradshaw shared how his health crises influenced his approach to marriage, family, and the future.
Bradshaw’s journey began with a bladder cancer diagnosis in November 2021. He underwent surgery and treatment at Yale University Medical Center. Months later, after experiencing neck pain, an MRI uncovered a Merkel cell tumor, a rare skin cancer.
Initially, Bradshaw kept his first diagnosis private. He focused on the treatability rather than the risk of dying. “I didn’t feel panic. I didn’t think death. I’m pretty sure I said, ‘Well, curable.’ Yeah. The doctor thinks in six weeks,” he recalled.
The second diagnosis led to surgery on his parotid gland area, removing 27 lymph nodes and followed by six weeks of radiation treatments.
The National Cancer Institute describes Merkel cell carcinoma as rare, fast-growing, and prone to early spreading, especially in sun-exposed areas like the head and neck.
Despite the potential for cancer’s return, Bradshaw’s faith offered comfort. “No, death did not frighten me. It did not in any way frighten me,” he stated. “I know I’m going to die. And when that time comes, how will I handle that with grace and strength and an understanding that God loves me?”
The experiences influenced Bradshaw’s life with his wife, Tammy. They seek to enjoy more travel and time together. “I want her to have more happiness than she ever thought possible. To me, that just makes, that fills my spirit,” Bradshaw expressed.
Bradshaw’s memoir, “Looking for Terry: A Memoir,” will cover his battles with cancer and depression, his faith, and his public persona from his five-decade career in football and television. The book is scheduled for release on October 13.
Bradshaw’s notable career achievements include being the No. 1 overall pick in the 1970 NFL Draft and leading Pittsburgh to four Super Bowl championships. He earned Super Bowl MVP twice and was inducted into the Pro Football Hall of Fame in 1989. He continues as a co-host of “FOX NFL Sunday.”
