Germany’s far-right Alternative for Germany (AfD) achieved a historic victory in the Saxony-Anhalt election. Exit polls indicate the party secured 44.5% of the vote, significantly surpassing its rivals. This result marks the strongest performance by a far-right party in a German state since World War II.
Despite this success, uncertainty persists about the AfD’s ability to form a government. Traditionally, other parties have avoided forming coalitions with the AfD. This victory poses a substantial setback for Chancellor Friedrich Merz’s conservative bloc.
