U.S. representatives Steve Witkoff and Jared Kushner arrived in Kyiv on a Sunday for discussions with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy. Their visit followed discussions with Russian President Vladimir Putin in Moscow, aimed at halting the ongoing conflict between the two nations.
President Zelenskyy communicated his readiness for talks by meeting with his negotiation team before the arrival of the American envoys. He emphasized Ukraine’s constructive stance and reiterated the importance of working towards peace and security guarantees. “Ukraine has always been and will remain constructive,” Zelenskyy stated. “We are interested in ending the war. Peace and security guarantees essential.”
“Our proposals are ready,” Zelenskyy affirmed. “Coordinated, substantive, and realistic actions are vital.”
The meeting in Kyiv occurs as the U.S. attempts to revive efforts towards a settlement in the war ignited by Russia’s invasion of Ukraine in February 2022. These efforts had stalled as U.S. focus shifted towards conflicts involving Iran.
Witkoff and Kushner spent over three hours with Putin in a confidential meeting, which concluded without any significant developments. Putin’s advisor, Yuri Ushakov, classified the dialogue as “constructive, frank and useful,” without divulging specific outcomes. After the meeting, a White House official mentioned discussions on “substantive plans for next steps,” poised for announcement in upcoming weeks. Optimism for “equally productive meetings” in Ukraine was expressed.
Despite ongoing negotiations, Moscow and Kyiv remain divided, particularly regarding territory. Ukraine opposes Russia’s demand to withdraw from Eastern regions it controls. Ushakov shared that Moscow provided a comprehensive battlefield overview during discussions and explored economic issues and large projects beneficial to both nations.
President Donald Trump established the mission for Kushner and Witkoff to explore potential peace agreements. “We have an idea for peace,” Trump mentioned. “I sent Steve Witkoff and Jared Kushner, two adept negotiators. There’s a chance for progress,” he expressed.
The diplomatic initiatives take place amid ongoing drone and missile attacks between Russia and Ukraine, despite temporary pauses on strikes during negotiations.
