Vice President JD Vance’s comment about “childless cat ladies” has sparked a variety of reactions and discussions, notably becoming a talking point during President Donald Trump’s 2024 campaign. Taylor Swift drew attention to this remark while endorsing Kamala Harris and Tim Walz.
Beverly Vance, the mother of JD Vance, was surprised to learn that Swift referenced her son’s comment. Speaking at the White House during the celebration of her decade of sobriety on Friday, April 4, 2025, Beverly expressed her unawareness. “I had no idea that’s what she was even doing. Until you just said that, I didn’t even put the two together,” she mentioned with a laugh during an appearance on OutKick’s “Tomi Lahren is Fearless.”
In a 2021 interview on Fox News with Tucker Carlson, JD Vance, at the time a Senate candidate, remarked that Democrats were “a bunch of childless cat ladies who are miserable at their own lives and the choices that they’ve made and so they want to make the rest of the country miserable, too.” His mother clarified that the comment was meant as a joke, attributing it to his sense of humor. “I just thought it was funny,” Beverly stated. “JD’s just got a sense of humor, and you know he was making a joke. Obviously, people didn’t take it as a joke, but you know, I know JD and he just meant it as a joke.”
The vice president acknowledged the backlash in his book, describing the comment as a mistake. Swift responded to the controversy by sharing a post endorsing Kamala Harris and Tim Walz, accompanied by a photo with a cat.
Tomi Lahren highlighted the connection between Swift’s husband, Kansas City Chiefs player Travis Kelce, and the Vances, as both Kelce and JD Vance spent parts of their lives in Ohio. Beverly noted Kelce’s background, pointing out his college football tenure at the University of Cincinnati.
