Bryan Kohberger, convicted for murdering four University of Idaho students, is set to return to court on October 15. He aims to challenge his guilty plea through post-conviction relief and seeks the removal of Judge Steven Hippler from his case.
In July, Kohberger, 31, argued his guilty plea was neither entered voluntarily nor with full understanding. He claimed ineffective counsel and unfulfilled promises influenced his decision. He accused his legal counsel of making threats. Kohberger now has attorney Greg Rauch from Moscow, Idaho, and Jason Goldman, a defense lawyer from New York, representing him.
Legal Team Updates
Goldman has indicated that they plan to submit an amended petition by November 13. This date coincides with the fourth anniversary of the murders. The team aims to address key constitutional issues related to Kohberger’s plea.
Kohberger had originally pleaded guilty on July 2, 2025, to four counts of first-degree murder and a related burglary charge. The murders involved Madison Mogen, Kaylee Goncalves, Xana Kernodle, and Ethan Chapin. Through a plea deal, he avoided the death penalty but received life in prison without parole plus ten additional years.
Court and Defense Moves
In August, Rauch filed a 22-page motion to disqualify Judge Hippler, citing concerns about the judge’s impartiality. The motion arose after Hippler refused Kohberger’s former defense team additional time to complete discovery before trial. Rauch also criticized the judge’s language during sentencing, describing Kohberger in critical terms.
Meanwhile, Deputy Latah County Prosecuting Attorney Keith Scholl requested transcripts from hearings where Kohberger admitted guilt. The court has required Kohberger’s defense to explain why a supplementary filing, attached to their motion to disqualify the judge, should remain sealed. They must also provide this confidential document to the prosecutor’s office.
