Malachi Toney, wide receiver for the Miami Hurricanes, has gained significant attention after an outstanding start to the season. This past Friday, Toney significantly contributed to a commanding 45-6 victory against the Stanford Cardinal, recording 12 receptions, 234 yards, and three touchdowns. Quarterback Darian Mensah often looked to Toney during the game, with Toney accounting for the majority of Mensah’s 401 passing yards.
Following Toney’s remarkable game, Miami Hurricanes legend Michael Irvin expressed his admiration on his “The Locker Room Podcast.” Irvin remarked, “Everything he does, his timing is so perfect, and his patience is so over the top. This is the greatest receiver I’ve ever laid my eyes on.”
Irvin noted that he wanted to evaluate other performances before commenting, but concluded that Toney’s display remained unparalleled. He emphasized that Toney is performing feats he hasn’t witnessed at the collegiate or pro level, and believes Toney will continue to improve as his career progresses.
Irvin’s compliments carry weight, considering his achievements with the Hurricanes and later as a top NFL receiver. He secured a National Championship with Miami in 1987, followed by an illustrious NFL career with the Dallas Cowboys, earning five Pro Bowl selections and three Super Bowl wins.
Despite the season only recently starting, the impressive statement from Irvin stands out. Jeremiah Smith of Ohio State also had a strong opening, achieving eight receptions for 151 yards and two touchdowns in their 56-3 win over Ball State. Smith’s schedule includes challenging opponents, like Saturday’s matchup with No. 6 Texas. Toney, however, will have his chances to validate Irvin’s praise, with important games against teams like Notre Dame on November 7, and other ACC matchups.
The upcoming college football season promises to reveal which of these standout receivers will have superior overall performance and stats.
