Last week’s football game between Michigan and Western Michigan ended in controversy. Michigan achieved a 13-12 victory after a Hail Mary touchdown. The referees reviewed a prior play and added one second to the game clock, fueling backlash.
The decision drew criticism towards the Big Ten, with many voicing frustration. However, prominent college football coach Urban Meyer focused on the postgame press conference attendees.
“Who gives a [expletive] about the president of Western Michigan?” Meyer questioned during the “Triple Option Podcast.” He remarked, “I want to hear from the players who played the game, not just the administration.”
Following the game’s outcome, Western Michigan’s president, Russ Kavalhuna, and head coach, Lance Taylor, addressed the loss in a press conference. Kavalhuna explained a discrepancy between the clock seen by broadcasters and officials. Despite wanting to challenge the decision, there was no appeal process available.
He acknowledged the emotional impact on the players, describing their experience as “gut-wrenching.” Meyer also pondered the challenge coaches face in consoling players after such losses, emphasizing the need to move on.
Meyer praised Western Michigan’s performance, noting their strength, especially in the second half. “Western Michigan was the better team in Ann Arbor during the fourth quarter,” he added.
Looking ahead, Western Michigan plans to recover from the defeat as they host Monmouth. Meanwhile, Michigan faces the No. 10 Oklahoma Sooners.
