Controversy Over College Football Teams Adding NFL Players Resolved

The LSU Tigers have decided not to include former NFL players Dae’Quan Wright and Zxavian Harris on their roster. This decision marks the end of the debate regarding Wright and Harris, who were formerly associated with the Cleveland Browns and New Orleans Saints. The Southeastern Conference (SEC) recently sought legal authority from a federal court to potentially expel LSU from the conference if they pursued the inclusion of ex-NFL players. The SEC is expected to address this issue in a meeting with member schools on Thursday, as reported by Justin Williams, Seth Emerson, and Matt Baker of The Athletic.

In a statement, the SEC emphasized its commitment to self-governance and maintaining established rules of competition. They stated, “The SEC and its member universities have the right to establish, through agreed-upon governance procedures, the rules under which they voluntarily compete and to expect those rules to be followed. A commitment to those rules, and to the core principles of the Southeastern Conference, is an essential element of SEC membership. Today’s filing is necessary to defend that right and preserve the Conference’s ability to govern competition among its members.”

Now that coach Lane Kiffin and LSU have decided not to add ex-NFL players, the meeting on Thursday might focus on reprimanding LSU rather than initiating substantive changes. The SEC’s threat was significant, demonstrating the potential consequences for LSU if they deviated from conference regulations.
