Manager Craig Counsell candidly assessed the team’s struggles, stating, “We’re not playing good enough. There are things we’re missing in all areas. We had a defensive mistake that cost us a run and a couple of bullpen issues. We need to do more collectively to win.” Gausman has had inconsistent outings, allowing five or more earned runs in three of seven starts, yet delivering quality performances in three others.

As the Cubs face a four-game losing streak, their grip on a playoff spot is weakening. Less than a month ago, qualifying for the postseason seemed assured. On August 12, the Cubs held a comfortable lead, sitting 7 1/2 games ahead in playoff contention and 6 1/2 games ahead of the San Diego Padres for the National League’s first wild-card spot. However, recent results have left the Cubs in the second wild-card spot, trailing the Phillies and narrowly ahead of the Padres.

Manager Craig Counsell acknowledged the importance of winning games, stating that their focus remains on controlling their fate within the remaining 15 regular-season games. Ian Happ expressed optimism about the team’s ability to influence their playoff destiny, emphasizing their goal to play playoff baseball.

Issues in the Bullpen

The Cubs’ bullpen has become a concern as the season progresses. Veteran reliever Jacob Webb has struggled recently, blowing three games since ending a two-month scoreless streak. Daniel Palencia and Ryan Zeferjahn have also faced challenges in maintaining effectiveness. The bullpen’s ERA stands at 5.08, ranking among the lowest in MLB.
