President Trump Criticizes Luka Dončić Trade at Republican National Committee Convention

At the Republican National Committee midterm convention, President Trump addressed various topics, including the recent Luka Dončić trade. Holding his speech at the American Airlines Center, home of the Dallas Mavericks, Trump shared his views on the deal that moved Dončić to the Los Angeles Lakers last year.

The president expressed confusion over the trade, calling it one of the worst in sports history, though he acknowledged that the infamous Babe Ruth transfer from the Red Sox to the Yankees might still be worse. “I redo deals all the time,” Trump said, suggesting an interest in reversing the decision.

Early last year, the Mavericks traded Dončić and two other players for Anthony Davis and a 2029 first-round draft pick. This decision faced backlash from Dallas fans who were upset by losing Dončić, a vital part of the franchise at age 27.

Luka Dončić, now playing for the Lakers, continues to be a prominent figure, highlighted by a game against the Chicago Bulls earlier this year. The Mavericks are primarily owned by Miriam Adelson’s family, close allies of Trump.

Trump’s comments at the convention are part of a pattern of his engagement in sports debates. He has previously criticized NFL’s kickoff rules and expressed frustration over Shedeur Sanders’ NFL draft position via Truth Social.

Additionally, President Trump voiced concerns over FIFA’s suspension of U.S. forward Folarin Balogun during the World Cup. While the suspension was reversed, Trump clarified that FIFA acted independently.
