Miles White Matures to Boost Hobart’s Performance

Emotional Control Aiding Player Development

Miles White, a junior at Hobart, has focused on controlling his emotions, knowing they can be counterproductive. By doing so, he enhances his talent, becoming a more complete player. White reflected, “I’m way more mature than I was last year. Last year, I was more kid-ish, more aggressive. But I’m more mellow now.” However, he remains productive. As a 6-foot-4, 220-pound hybrid linebacker/safety and running back, White contributed 19 tackles and five for loss for the Brickies with a record of 3-0, 1-0, before a conference game against Kankakee Valley on Friday. He also had 27 carries for 180 yards and scored four touchdowns.

Comparing Statistics From Last Season

White’s achievements last season included 69 tackles with seven for loss, an interception, and a fumble recovery. He rushed for 194 yards and achieved three touchdowns on 15 carries. Hobart coach Eric Schreiber Jr. notes White’s growth regarding maturity and handling additional responsibilities this season. “He’s making a lot of big plays. I’m happy with where he is right now, and he has the potential to build on it,” Schreiber said.

Demonstrating Versatility

White’s versatility is evident in his ability to play in different defensive roles and run the ball aggressively while possessing the speed to cover distances. “It’s really just what kind of load he can carry because he rarely comes off the field,” Schreiber emphasizes. White expresses a preference for defense, stating, “I like hitting people. I like being the person who decides how the game’s going to go.”

Enhanced Team Influence

White’s impact has grown for the Brickies, who rank No. 6 in the Class 4A state coaches poll. White shared, “This year, I feel like I got better with my team. Last year, I feel like I kept to myself a little bit. But I’m expanding and getting more with the team.” He focuses on preparation and maintaining team energy. Senior linebacker Vontrell Jones notices White’s contributions, noting, “Miles is a great guy and a key piece of the team. He’s always been an energy guy.” Jones appreciates White’s maturity, respecting him as one of the most respectful players on the field.

Future Aspirations and Opportunities

White hopes for a successful season deep into the fall. Last year, the Brickies claimed their first sectional title since 2020. White reminisced about the youthful spirit of last season, but now sees a more unified and confident team. “We’re more confident, more prepared,” he stated.

Beyond football, White actively participates in basketball and volleyball, having started most of his two-season basketball career and averaging 4.3 points and 5.7 rebounds last season. He seeks college horizons in football, with planned visits to Iowa State and Louisville. Schreiber encourages further commitment in the offseason regarding physical and academic readiness, noting, “The sky’s the limit for him. It’s just going to be up to him.”
