Recent Developments

Until recently, researchers believed they were on the cusp of a breakthrough in heart disease treatment. Three companies were conducting large clinical trials on drugs designed to significantly reduce Lp(a) levels. The anticipation was high, comparable to the introduction of statins.

Last Friday, Novartis, which was the first to conclude its trial, released unexpected results after market closure. Although the experimental drug successfully reduced Lp(a) levels by 80%, it did not lead to a decrease in heart attacks or strokes. The failure of the drug to prevent these conditions was surprising.

“There’s something we don’t understand here,” said Dr. John Alexander, a cardiologist at Duke.

Lp(a) and Its Implications

Cardiologists frequently encounter patients who suffer heart attacks despite having normal cholesterol and blood pressure levels. These patients do not have diabetes, obesity, or smoke. Often, however, they present high Lp(a) levels.

About 20% of Americans show elevated Lp(a) levels. Those with the highest concentrations could face double or triple the risk of experiencing a heart attack. This finding has made Lp(a) a crucial element in heart disease research. Thus, a drug reducing Lp(a) levels appeared promising for protecting these at-risk patients.

The recent trial outcomes have now prompted researchers to question what Lp(a) might be indicating. Is there an unknown cause of heart disease yet to be discovered?
