A Survivor’s Reflection on 9/11

An Ordinary Day Shattered

Mark Englert, a business consultant from Connecticut, lived near the World Trade Center in Manhattan on September 11, 2001. He was returning from a morning jog when he heard an explosion. He rushed to his window, seeing people on the street looking up. He learned one of the towers was on fire due to an airplane crash.

Seventeen minutes later, another plane flew overhead, hitting the second tower. Englert dropped to the floor of his apartment, overwhelmed by the event. On the roof, he witnessed people jumping from the building, escaping the fire.

Shared History

The narrator, a longtime friend of Mark’s, first heard his story right after the attack. As a reporter then, he contacted friends in Lower Manhattan, with Mark being the first to respond. Over the years, despite many shared experiences, they hadn’t discussed the events of 9/11 until prompted by an editor’s request for an article.

Rescue and Escape

Recalling the chaos, Mark described his building filled with people panicking. After the first tower collapsed, he assisted an elderly neighbor. Despite the urgency, she paused to change shoes as ash rained down. They encountered a police officer who urgently warned them to run as the second tower fell.

Reaching the waterfront, they joined a seaborne evacuation, which saved 500,000 people, a larger effort than Dunkirk during World War II.

Long-lasting Trauma

After a year, Mark returned to his apartment, living in Battery Park City for over two decades. Despite passing the 9/11 memorial daily, he never visited. News about the event still unsettles him, emphasizing that his memories endure.

The sound of low-flying jets remains triggering, showing how profoundly the day affected him.
