Junior linebacker Vito Pickard Jr. demonstrated his commitment to Homewood-Flossmoor in a game full of personal significance. While it was a critical match for the Vikings, it also held special meaning for coach Troy McAllister, going up against his previous team, Sandburg. Pickard expressed his understanding of the game’s importance, stating, “I knew this game was important for our coach because he was going up against his old school.” He pledged to set the tone for his team and ensure they remained sharp.
Pickard lived up to his promise, delivering five tackles and securing a touchdown on a fumble return. This contributed significantly to a 35-13 victory over the Eagles in the SouthWest Suburban Conference. Senior quarterback Rahsaan Coleman also made a notable play with a 64-yard touchdown pass to junior receiver John Gadson, helping the Vikings bounce back from a previous 38-7 defeat to Lincoln-Way East.
For the Eagles, senior quarterback Sean Ruisz completed a 20-yard touchdown pass to senior tight end Lucas Matykiewicz, committed to Northern Illinois. Senior linebacker Cameron Wilkerson further widened the gap with a 19-yard fumble return touchdown, acknowledging Pickard’s influence on the game. “Vito really changed the momentum,” Wilkerson remarked, praising Pickard’s speed and defensive intelligence.
Coach McAllister, who led Sandburg to state playoffs multiple times in four years, commended Pickard’s athletic skill and adaptability, especially when facing top-tier quarterback Sean Ruisz. Despite the challenge, H-F managed to sack Ruisz five times, forced four turnovers, and scored twice on fumble returns. “Vito embraced the challenge,” said McAllister.
Pickard, wearing No. 25—more typical for a running back—has shown exceptional skills as a linebacker. At one point, he played running back, revealing his open-field talents with a 34-yard fumble return touchdown, his first career score. Reflecting on the game, Pickard emphasized his leadership and the need to uplift the team after a loss. “I thought it was important to show leadership,” he stated.
Pickard’s journey has been notable, transitioning from playing in Hammond, Indiana, to excelling at H-F. Becoming more accustomed over time, his integration coincided with McAllister’s arrival. “It was hard at first,” Pickard admitted, “but I worked really hard in the offseason.” Standing at 6-foot, 190 pounds, Pickard serves as a versatile player, combining roles of a safety with linebacker agility, and brings his track sprinter speed to the field.
Recognizing the lively atmosphere at H-F, Pickard thrives amid the enthusiasm from the band and audience. “You have the band, the audience, and I love showing out for them,” he shared. On the field, while typically quiet, Pickard becomes vocal, enhancing team morale and performance. “People say I’m a quiet guy, but I get pretty loud on the field,” he explained, describing his ability to inspire his teammates to strive for more.
