A Florida woman suffered severe burns when a stranger allegedly set fire to her gasoline pump in what police describe as a random attack. The incident occurred while she was filling her vehicle at a gas station in St. Petersburg.
Details of the Incident
The victim, identified as Christine Sherbuk, age 41, was attacked by Eleanor Crawford. Crawford allegedly ignited the gas while Sherbuk was pumping fuel into her Volvo SUV. This action resulted in both the vehicle catching fire and Sherbuk sustaining second-degree burns on her arms and back.
Witnesses report that the attack took place around 8 p.m. at a Mobil station. Sherbuk was transported to the trauma center at Tampa General Hospital. Reports indicate she is in a serious condition but expected to recover.
Witness Accounts
Scotty Gramling was at the scene during the attack. He helped Sherbuk and contacted emergency services. Gramling mentioned seeing Crawford involved in an altercation nearby shortly before the incident.
The situation at the gas station escalated rapidly. Police were responding to a previous disturbance involving Crawford when the attack on Sherbuk occurred.
Police Response and Arrest
Law enforcement apprehended Crawford shortly after the incident. Multiple witnesses confirmed that Crawford set the gasoline on fire. The police are holding her on charges of attempted felony murder and arson, with a bond set at $350,000.
Crawford’s past includes several charges related to drugs and alcohol. Police have not disclosed if she was under any influence at the time of the attack. A GPS monitor will be fitted as per court orders before her release.
There is currently no known motive. However, the case is still under investigation.
