Bettina Anderson, wife of Donald Trump Jr., commented on a report about a Russian oligarch funding part of their wedding celebrations. She clarified that the money covered a separate celebration, not the wedding itself. A ProPublica investigation revealed Umar Kremlev, linked to Vladimir Putin, covered expenses including a private island rental and a fireworks display via a Dubai-based entity.
Anderson described Kremlev as a dear friend who provided an extraordinarily generous wedding gift. She emphasized that Kremlev’s involvement was personal, not political. Anderson criticized the portrayal of the event as politically motivated and labeled the report “fake news.”
“NO CONSPIRACY, NO MYSTERY,” Anderson wrote. “Sometimes a wedding gift is simply a wedding gift.”
Anderson clarified that Kremlev’s celebration occurred after their private wedding with family. They joined an already-planned weekend with friends as newlyweds. A spokesperson for Trump Jr. referred to Anderson’s Instagram statement as their response.
The ProPublica report identified Kremlev as covering expenses for the events, which were conspicuously marked by the presence of Russian guests. Kremlev’s spokesperson described him as a personal friend of Trump Jr., not a business associate. Neither the White House nor the Russian government commented on the report.
Umar Kremlev’s Background
Umar Kremlev, formerly Umar Lutfulloyev, was linked to the Night Wolves motorcycle club with connections to Putin’s security service. He became president of the Russian Boxing Federation in 2016 and the International Boxing Association (IBA) in 2020. The IBA, amid financial issues and corruption, secured sponsorship from Gazprom.
Former IBA officials accused Kremlev of advancing Kremlin political interests. The International Olympic Committee withdrew recognition of the IBA in 2023 due to governance and financial concerns.
Kremlev expanded his influence beyond boxing, entering Russia’s sports betting sector and acquiring Rolf, a large car dealership. He is involved with Healthy Fatherland, which faces Ukrainian sanctions. As Russia faced sanctions over Ukraine, Kremlev moved much of IBA’s operations to the UAE.
Kremlev has sought closer connections to the Trump family, sending Trump a letter in 2025 regarding an IBA dispute. He hosted Trump Jr. at an IBA event in Istanbul, where they appeared together publicly.
