Bob Mackie, renowned costume and fashion designer, passed away at age 87. Known as the ‘Sultan of Sequins,’ his creations shaped defining moments in 20th-century entertainment.
His death was shared on his official Instagram account. The statement expressed sorrow, noting Mackie’s life was fully lived. His dream of fashion and costume design was his lifelong passion.
Mackie’s career spanned over six decades. He dressed icons from Bette Midler to Taylor Swift. Some designs gained fame alongside those who wore them. Marilyn Monroe’s rhinestone dress worn for President Kennedy in 1962 was one of his early notable works. He also created Cher’s famous 1986 Oscars outfit with a feathered headdress.
In a 1990 NPR interview, Mackie explained that clothing communicates individuality. His collaboration with Cher highlighted their long-standing partnership.
Though celebrated for haute couture, Mackie focused on unique creations for performers. On the podcast Bullseye, he stated runway fashion is about more than selling a dress—it tells a story.
Raised in Southern California, Mackie’s interest came from Hollywood, not fashion magazines. In interviews, he recounted being more drawn to movie and theater publications.
His departure from the Chouinard Art Institute led to a chance encounter with Edith Head, landing him a sketching role at Paramount Studios in 1961. His designs became staples for stars like Whitney Houston, Tina Turner, Diana Ross, and Carol Burnett.
On The Carol Burnett Show, Mackie designed about 17,000 costumes, averaging 50 per week. One of his famous designs was for Burnett’s Gone With The Wind parody, now part of the Smithsonian collection.
Elton John’s 1980 concert featured Mackie’s comical Donald Duck costume, illustrating his theatrical flair. Despite its humor, John recalled the joy and laughter it brought.
His work continued with contemporary artists, dressing Miley Cyrus, Zendaya, and Pink. He even partnered with Mattel on Barbie dolls.
Awarded 10 Emmys and three Oscar nominations, Mackie received lifetime honors from the Council of Fashion Designers of America and RuPaul’s Drag Race. Often called the ‘patron saint of drag queens,’ RuPaul praised Mackie’s distinctive style in the 2024 documentary Bob Mackie: Naked Illusion.
