On May 24, Donald Trump Jr. celebrated with scantily clad dancers and an extravagant fireworks show during the final night of his wedding festivities in the Bahamas. The event, a three-day celebration, took place on two exclusive private islands. A five-tier funfetti cake had been brought from Florida, while guests arrived via helicopters and seaplanes to stay in oceanfront villas. Trump Jr. lifted his bride, Bettina Anderson, into the air as fireworks launched over the sea.
The opulent wedding was significantly funded by Umar Kremlev, a Russian oligarch closely associated with President Vladimir Putin. According to documentation reviewed by ProPublica and interviews with three individuals familiar with the event, Kremlev took on hundreds of thousands of dollars in expenses. He covered costs for renting one of the islands for the reception and guest accommodations, as well as spending on the fireworks spectacle.
Umar Kremlev is the head of the International Boxing Association, a sports organization previously supported by the Russian state-owned Gazprom. The wedding costs were funded by an IBA-affiliated entity based in Dubai. Fifty guests were in attendance, including Trump Jr.’s brother-in-law Jared Kushner, his brother Eric Trump, and Kremlev himself. Some attendees expressed confusion about the Russians’ presence, as they sometimes kept to themselves.
Trump Jr.’s connection with Kremlev brought surprise, noting a member of Putin’s circle supporting his wedding. National security experts expressed concern, questioning Kremlev’s motivation behind such financial generosity. Frank Montoya Jr., a retired FBI official, remarked, “If I’m paying for your wedding, at some point, you’re going to owe me something.” Montoya warned that Trump Jr.’s acceptance of such favors was risky.
Holden Triplett, an advisor on Trump’s National Security Council, highlighted that Russian intelligence often builds ties with officials through financial means. He emphasized, “Money is a tried-and-true method to gain access.” Leading to the wedding, Kremlev accompanied Putin in China where Putin awarded him the Order of Friendship.
Despite public wealth estimates of Trump Jr. at $300 million, the reasons behind accepting Kremlev’s patronage remain unclear. Trump Jr.’s spokesperson acknowledged Kremlev’s financial role, stating that the two bonded over mutual friends, boxing, and the outdoors.
Kremlev’s undisclosed association and role in funding the wedding indicate an unusual bond with the Trump family. His influence includes affiliations with Russian government circles, promotions in the sports betting industry, and ownership of a major car dealership. His public persona is boisterous, often flaunting wealth and connections.
After backing by Russia weakened, Kremlev shifted IBA operations from Europe to the UAE amid concern over American sanctions. This allowed the Dubai entity, IB Challenger, to finance Trump Jr.’s wedding. Sources report that the IBA’s finances still rely heavily on Russian sources.
Beyond financial transactions, Kremlev expressed a keen interest in cultivating ties with the Trump family. In September 2025, he collaborated with Trump Jr. in Istanbul for a panel discussion about boxing. This was only one of several interactions that potentially signal a persisting relationship. A press release following the event hinted at future initiatives between Kremlev and Trump Jr., suggesting that their partnership might grow beyond symbolic gestures.
