NFL quarterbacks often endure hard hits during games. These impacts have sidelined some top passers early in the season. Yet, Joe Burrow, Cincinnati Bengals’ star quarterback, experienced an unusual benefit from one such encounter.
After a Sunday game against the Houston Texans, Burrow humorously shared with Texans pass rusher Will Anderson Jr. that the defense “popped my rib back into place.” Despite his laughter, Burrow was serious about the incident.
On Tuesday, the NFL released footage of Burrow, mic’d up during the game, relaying the same story to his teammates. “One of those hits popped my rib back in place,” Burrow informed receiver Ja’Marr Chase, causing disbelief among his teammates. He reiterated the claim upon their request.
Teammates speculated the likely hit was from Danielle Hunter. Receiver Tee Higgins recalled Burrow’s reaction, “He stood up and said ‘Aaaarrgghhh.'” Burrow later confirmed he felt better afterward, agreeing with a teammate’s observation that Hunter’s hit “adjusted your whole back.”
Despite his back appearing problematic enough to keep him on the injury report before Week 2, Burrow managed to perform during the game. Bengals coach Zac Taylor stated Monday, Burrow exited the game in “good” condition, yet remains uncertain for full practice ahead of Sunday’s matchup against the Pittsburgh Steelers.
Fans may find relief knowing Burrow’s condition hasn’t worsened after these harsh tackles.
