Senator Bernie Moreno from Ohio is voicing concerns over a Biden-era drug policy, alleging its role in a grave incident involving one of his constituents. Moreno seeks intervention from the Department of Justice to prevent similar situations in the future.
Incident Involving Ohio Doctor
Ohio doctor Hassan Abbas faced sentencing this month for identity fraud and obtaining a dangerous drug through deception. Prosecutors stated that Abbas used his estranged wife’s personal information to acquire abortion pills by mail. Allegedly, he then force-fed these pills to his girlfriend, a former patient, after she disclosed her pregnancy. The woman claimed she did not wish to terminate her pregnancy and was coerced by Abbas.
Policy and Legal Implications
In a letter to Attorney General Blanche, Moreno requested measures to prevent such actions in the future, expressing the tragedy caused by current mail-in abortion policies. Moreno highlighted the 2023 Risk Evaluation and Mitigation Strategy change, initiated by the Biden administration’s FDA. This amendment permits prescribing mifepristone via telehealth and mailing it. Moreno argued this allowed Abbas to obtain drugs remotely, exploiting his estranged wife’s identity.
Legal Challenges and Reactions
The ongoing legal case in Louisiana challenges this FDA rule change, arguing against the removal of in-person dispensing requirements for mifepristone. Moreno urged quick resolution to reinstate in-person distribution regulations during FDA’s ongoing drug safety review.
Abbas received a plea deal resulting in a six-month jail sentence and two years of probation, an outcome Moreno criticized. He called for the Department of Justice to reassess the case for possible federal charges.
