Chicago Blackhawks Prep for New Season with Rookie Roman Kantserov

The Chicago Blackhawks face a shortened training camp, with no time to waste ahead of the season opener on September 29 in Las Vegas. Building chemistry and shaking off rust are key. Rookie winger Roman Kantserov is among the newcomers focusing on forming on-ice relationships quickly.

Roman Kantserov, a 22-year-old from Russia, is proactive in developing connections with teammates like Patrick Kane and Frank Nazar. He skates on the top line as a left winger, alongside Nazar and Kane. Kantserov emphasizes understanding drills and game strategies, seeking help when needed. He appreciates new opportunities to learn and grow.

“If Coach is talking about how we play our drills, if I don’t understand, I just ask (and) they help me,” Kantserov said. “Like power play, with Patrick with how I need (to) support him on (the) bumper, how I can play with the other guys. I like this. (It’s a) new opportunity for me.”

Teammates Kane and Nazar acknowledge Kantserov’s efforts and talents. Kane praises his skill, citing communication as a strong point. Nazar appreciates Kantserov’s competitiveness and puck control.

Kantserov comes off a successful season with the KHL’s Metallurg Magnitogorsk. He achieved 64 points in 63 regular-season games and made significant playoff contributions. His records for a player under 22 in the KHL are significant. Kantserov notes differences between playing leagues in Russia and the U.S., observing faster and more strategic gameplay in America.

Connor Bedard’s return might see Kantserov on the top line, fostering their budding relationship outside the rink. Bedard invites Kantserov for social activities, enhancing their connection.

“Every night he texts me, like, ‘We go movie,’ ‘We go dinner if you want to join to us,’” Kantserov said. “He’s a great guy.”

Kantserov is under pressure as a potential long-term winger for Bedard, alongside his previous experiences in the KHL. His focus remains on playing his game with discipline. Coach Jeff Blashill emphasizes Kantserov’s genuine skills and stable demeanor during camp, encouraging him to enjoy hockey.

“On tape he showed a real high hockey IQ,” Blashill said. “I really like his efficient skill. He doesn’t need to be trained to play a 200-foot game — he already does. All those things pointed to me that he has a chance to come in here and be a real solid player.”

Kantserov came close to scoring his first NHL goal in a preseason game against the Minnesota Wild, marking an assist on Bowen Byram’s play. Despite nerves, Kantserov expresses excitement for his first outing as a Hawk.

“I think everybody’s nervous before the first season,” Kantserov said, “but it’s like great nervous, (so) I’m excited.”
