The year 2026 presents significant challenges in labor politics. Nationwide, several large private-sector union contracts are set to expire later this summer.
These include agreements for 20,000 Verizon employees in the Northeast and Mid-Atlantic, as well as 25,000 steel-mill workers in the Midwest. Earlier in the year, Stop & Shop managed to avert a strike by reaching an agreement with 28,000 food workers in New England.
Despite a decline in influence, organized labor is finding new supporters across the political spectrum. Both the Left and the Right show growing interest in supporting labor movements.
