Voters Express Concern Over Rising Gas Prices

A recent Fox News poll shows that 61% of voters think gas prices pose a major issue, with individuals now paying more than $4.40 per gallon on average for regular gas. The American Automobile Association reports that the national average for regular gas on Thursday was $4.4386, compared to Wednesday’s $4.3672, last week’s $4.2770, and last month’s $4.0636.

The increase in gas prices highlights affordability worries affecting Americans as the November elections approach. President Donald Trump has downplayed the increase in gas prices, stating that the cost is small for the actions taken against Iran. During a discussion in North Carolina, he suggested that prices will eventually decrease.

Most registered voters are experiencing financial difficulties due to increased fuel costs. The Fox News Poll indicates that 61% consider it a major concern, which is up from 48% two years ago. Farmers have criticized Trump for high diesel prices, reported at $6.31 on Wednesday by AAA. In parts of California, gas prices are nearing or exceeding $10 per gallon, causing difficulties for stations to display prices on three-digit signs. Newsweek sought comment from the White House via email.

Poll Findings

When questioned about the economy under the Trump Administration, 63% of registered voters said it’s worse. The poll indicates 73% of independents, 26% of Republicans, and 95% of Democrats share this view. Fifty-five percent believe Democrats would handle inflation and prices better, compared to 40% who prefer Republicans. Thirty-four percent consider inflation the most critical issue, while 14% prioritize the economy and jobs. Overall, the president’s approval rating is 39%, with 61% disapproval. Approval regarding inflation is at 24%, against a 74% disapproval. The poll, conducted from Sept 11-14 among 1,211 voters, has a 3% margin of error.

Craig Agranoff, a political professor at Florida Atlantic University, stated, “Gas above $4.40 with 61% of voters calling it a major problem is a real warning for Republicans.” He noted that action, rather than messaging, is needed to tackle these concerns, as the midterms approach.

Trump, Iran, and the Midterms

Midterm elections often reflect the political climate for the current ruling party. Historically, the president’s party loses seats during these elections. Republicans hold a narrow majority in Congress. Trump plans to campaign in the days ahead of November’s election, focusing on 35 critical seats. Affordability concerns remain central to voters from both parties.

Recently, Trump addressed price issues, blaming them on “Sleepy Joe Biden” rather than himself. He mentioned rising prices under Biden and credited his administration for apparently preventing a nuclear threat from Iran. He suggested that once the conflict with Iran subsides, oil prices will drop significantly. According to AAA, the highest recorded gas price was $5.0165 on June 14, 2022, when Joe Biden was president.
