U.S. President Donald Trump banned reporters from CNN, MS NOW, and Politico from the White House over what he claims is negative and dishonest coverage. He announced this action in a post on Truth Social, criticizing media for allegedly spreading false information about his administration. Trump warned that other media outlets might face similar actions.
The ban marks Trump’s ongoing conflict with the press. At a press conference, a Bloomberg News reporter questioned Trump about whether he was trying to intimidate the media. Trump denied this, expressing his disdain for what he called “dishonest press.” According to Trump, the decision stemmed from accumulated frustration over two years rather than any specific news report.
On Saturday, MS NOW, formerly known as MSNBC, reported that its journalists were barred from accessing the White House. Journalist Akayla Gardner was requested to surrender her badge, which was “disabled.” MS NOW expressed its intent to challenge this decision, emphasizing the importance of independent journalism in democracy.
CNN reporters faced similar issues. Betsy Klein, who has covered the White House for various administrations, found her badge deactivated without explanation. CNN reiterated its constitutional right to report freely and stated its resolve to hold the government accountable.
Politico’s Global Editor-in-Chief, Jonathan Greenberger, shared that reporter Cheyenne Haslett was also denied entry. He affirmed the organization’s commitment to defend their First Amendment rights.
This situation arises amid midterm elections, a contentious Middle East policy, and domestic policy challenges. The White House Correspondents’ Association condemned the ban, calling for journalists’ access to be reinstated. Courts have previously supported the media in access disputes with Trump, though appeals continue in some cases.
