Justin Herbert, the Chargers’ seventh-year quarterback, remains committed to on-field execution as the team seeks their first victory of the season. Herbert’s focus is apparent as he confidently addresses questions regarding the team’s 0-2 record ahead of their upcoming game against the undefeated Buffalo Bills.
We’ve got great leadership on this team. I trust those guys in that locker room, so I don’t think anyone has panicked or worried because that’s not going to do us any good. It’s about moving on to the next play and understanding we’re close, we made mistakes, how do we fix it and how do we move on?
Herbert stated. His assertive response surprises many who are used to his usual reserved demeanor during news conferences.
Despite the team’s shaky start, Chargers players and coaches continue to express their support for Herbert. Tre’ Harris, a wide receiver, emphasized the collective confidence in Herbert and offensive coordinator Mike McDaniel, saying, Everybody’s still on the same page. Everybody has extreme belief in 10 — I know I do — and extreme belief in [offensive coordinator Mike McDaniel] as well.
The Chargers are currently averaging just 14 points per game, placing them above only the Miami Dolphins (13) and Pittsburgh Steelers (11.5), both struggling teams themselves. Herbert’s completion percentage ranks 27th at 59.3%, and he is 23rd in passing yards with 401. He has thrown three interceptions so far.
Coach McDaniel notes, By default, Justin blames himself.
He continues to adapt to a new offensive scheme, with the team facing challenges such as a rotating left guard position and a rookie starting at center. According to Pro Football Focus, the Chargers have allowed a pressure rate of 45.5%, the second-highest in the league.
Herbert’s receivers contribute to the difficulties, struggling with pre-snap communication, drops, and injuries. The team has also incurred numerous penalties, totaling 15 for 109 yards, and has fumbled the ball seven times.
Nonetheless, the Chargers stand firm behind Herbert as they aim to resolve these issues. Safety Derwin James Jr. confirmed Herbert’s dedication, stating, He’s been locked in [and] dialed in, man. He’s working hard in the weight room [and] making all his throws out there.
Offensive coordinator Mike McDaniel is open to changes, considering adjustments like shrinking the playbook to improve the offensive output. He highlights the collaborative approach, stressing that both he and Herbert are much closer
now as they tackle current challenges.
The Chargers are on the brink of a 0-3 record for the first time since 2017, leading to external expectations for Herbert to alter the course of the season. Inside the organization, they value consistency, urging Herbert to maintain his steady performance. Reserve quarterback DJ Uiagalelei remarks on Herbert’s leadership, stating he is the same person, each and every day, consistently great at everything he does.
Coach Jim Harbaugh, expressing confidence in Herbert, shared, Since I’ve been with Justin, there’s not a thing I’d change about Justin.
