The 2026 NFL season has reached Week 3, and teams are beginning to show their potential. Some are emerging as playoff contenders, while others, like the Los Angeles Chargers, might need significant adjustments. Rob Gronkowski shared his thoughts on the Chargers’ performance this season.
Gronkowski commented on the Chargers during an event in New York City, stating, “The Los Angeles Chargers are probably the biggest mess in the NFL regarding how they’re playing and where they should be.” His assessment came after the Chargers, led by head coach Jim Harbaugh and new offensive coordinator Mike McDaniel, started the season with two losses against the Arizona Cardinals and Las Vegas Raiders.
That’s a mess over there right now,” Gronkowski remarked, emphasizing the challenges the Chargers face. He suggested, “They gotta just grab a Bounty paper towel and wipe off all their linemen, because they’re not clean. They’re dirty and they’re falling all over the place.”
The Chargers were seen as potential Super Bowl contenders, especially with McDaniel’s offensive innovations. However, they have scored only 14 points per game, ranking third-lowest in the league. Their total offensive yards per game places them 23rd overall. These statistics highlight significant issues in the team’s performance.
Quarterback Justin Herbert has struggled to find his rhythm, throwing just two touchdowns with three interceptions in two games. His completion rate stands at 59.3%. The offensive line, which has been a problem in recent seasons, contributes heavily to these struggles.
Gronkowski pointed out that the issues are not limited to one player. “It’s not just one thing that’s going wrong,” he explained. “The quarterback’s not playing good ball, the offensive coordinator isn’t reading his team well, and the offensive line is underperforming. It’s a collective of everything. It’s not just one thing.”
Addressing the Chargers’ challenges requires addressing multiple facets of their game. As Gronkowski noted, “It’s football. It’s such a team game that one player can’t make you collapse the way they’re collapsing. It’s everyone as a whole.”
Despite the early struggles, the season is still young. The Chargers face a tough schedule ahead, starting with a match against the 2-0 Buffalo Bills. Other upcoming opponents include the Seattle Seahawks, Denver Broncos, Kansas City Chiefs, Los Angeles Rams, Houston Texans, and Baltimore Ravens.
