America’s AI Race Against China: A Political Debate

As the midterms approach, the race between the U.S. and China in artificial intelligence has become a heated topic. Senator Ted Cruz warns that coordinated propaganda is influencing the debate. Recent discussions in Congress and among American families have focused on data centers and AI policy.

Senator Cruz, head of the Senate Commerce Committee, spoke to Fox News Digital about the opposition to data centers. He claimed it comes from a coordinated campaign similar to anti-fracking movements funded by Middle Eastern interests. Cruz argues this strategy aims to weaken America by pushing reliance on foreign resources.

Concerns Over Chinese Influence

While direct funding from China into the U.S. for data center policies isn’t confirmed, OpenAI reported banning accounts from China. These accounts were allegedly part of covert operations influencing American AI debates by spreading misinformation about data center electricity costs.

OpenAI’s decision reflects the concerns raised by Cruz about foreign influence shaping U.S. AI policy. Cruz emphasized that winning the AI race is pivotal for America’s economy.

The Impact of China’s Potential AI Dominance

If China leads in AI, Cruz contends that espionage, propaganda, and surveillance will be prioritized, reflecting the values of the Chinese Communist Party. In contrast, American values like free speech and privacy should be represented if the U.S. prevails.

The opposition to AI advancement is significant on the Democratic side. Cruz claims big industry players, seeking government favoritism, align with Democrat positions, threatening competitive innovation.

Effective Altruism and Leftist Ideologies

Cruz connects the opposition to AI and data centers with ‘effective altruism,’ describing it as a leftist movement promoting specific ideologies through AI. He warns of rent-seeking, where companies lobby the government to gain competitive advantages.

Investigative researcher Parker Thayer links effective altruism to the ‘AI doomerism movement,’ with influences from Democratic mega-donor Dustin Moskovitz and his wife Cari Tuna. They financially support organizations with similar ideologies.

Coefficient Giving’s Influence on AI Policy

Founded by Moskovitz and Tuna, Coefficient Giving has committed significant funds towards AI safety and policy advocacy. As its main funders, the couple has pledged $520 million from 2024 to 2025, with goals reaching over $1 billion by 2026.

In previous grant applications, Coefficient Giving sought to finance projects in areas including AI safety and biosecurity, reflecting its extensive influence on AI policy.
