Candy Thompson, a woman in her eighties, found herself moving away from Christianity after embracing feminism and undergoing significant life changes. Her journey led her back to her faith, expressing views on how feminism impacted her life.
Thompson had three abortions during her first marriage, which ended in divorce. She eventually returned to Christianity, criticizing feminism for causing division between sexes, and challenging traditional roles.
“The feminists pitted [women] against men, they pitted us against having children … It belittled who we were in the home and [as] mothers, and it belittled who we were as just women in a marriage,” Thompson stated. “When it pitted us against God even … then that’s what really led to what happened to me.”
Thompson attended the University of North Carolina in the 1960s. During her time in college, exposure to feminist ideas led her away from Christian values. She remarked on the appeal of feminism, emphasizing equality, but later regretted the shift away from her faith.
She experienced a miscarriage while in college, which profoundly affected her. Reflecting on that period, Thompson acknowledges it as a turning point that led to her struggles.
Throughout her first marriage, she faced challenges and made decisions that contrasted with her upbringing and faith. Thompson now recognizes the three pregnancies terminated during that time with acknowledgment-of-life certificates.
Discussing her early life’s decisions, Thompson conveyed feelings of confusion and anger, tracing these back to her departure from Christianity. Her return to her faith brought clarity and purpose.
“There were lots of effects like anger. I did not understand as a young woman what my actual created purpose was … Those things were not really clear until I returned to my former faith,” she explained.
Thompson observed young people today are eager for connection and understanding, yearning for committed relationships but struggling to form trust. She noted a disconnect between desires and societal guidance.
Thompson mentioned that young women seem lost, seeking direction that traditional values could provide, yet often missing these insights.
