Senator John Fetterman, representing Pennsylvania as a Democrat, caused laughter during a speaking event on Saturday by mistakenly calling himself a “lifelong Republican.” This slip occurred at the Texas Tribune Festival and quickly after, he corrected his mistake, emphasizing his commitment to the Democratic Party.
The confusion arose when an attendee questioned why Fetterman does not run as an independent. In response, Fetterman jestingly replied, “Because I’m a lifelong Republican,” before realizing his error, joking that the comment would be noticed and shared widely.
Earlier in the event, Fetterman criticized both major political parties. He expressed no intention of joining the Republicans, noting, “I don’t have a reason to.” He highlighted the inclusivity issues in politics, using a hypothetical example of extreme statements about America and Al-Qaida to make his point.
Fetterman acknowledged he has “no path as a Republican,” mentioning that many Democrats find his willingness to engage with Republican lawmakers frustrating. He stated, “If the Democratic Party votes me out or expels me, they’re always entitled to do that.”
Despite discussions about switching parties, Republicans have been encouraging, after Fetterman hinted at possibly leaving the Democratic ranks. He further fueled speculation with a video introducing Republican Senator Dave McCormick at a recent Republican event.
Fetterman’s visit to Israel reinforced his Democratic ties, where he showed support amid recent attacks by the terrorist group Hamas. His political career began by defeating Dr. Mehmet Oz in 2022, securing a crucial Democratic majority. Initially progressive, he has since challenged the party’s direction.
Earlier in the year, Fetterman warned of leaving the Democratic Party if it leans further into anti-Israel stances. He has criticized the party’s current trajectory, especially with the rise of figures like Abdul El-Sayed in Michigan.
