Buchmann’s Unique Strategy Leads to Bassmaster Elite Qualifier Victory

Kaden Buchmann claimed victory at the first Bassmaster Elite Qualifier of the season held at Norfork Lake in Arkansas. Over three days, Buchmann amassed a total of 42 pounds, 7 ounces, securing his win in this competitive tournament.

This event, one of three Elite Qualifiers, determines which ten anglers earn invitations to the 2027 Bassmaster Elite Series. Notably, forward-facing sonar was prohibited, leading Buchmann to seek alternatives to locate bass without technological assistance.

Creative Strategy

Buchmann turned to an unusual method: observing deer on the shoreline. By noting areas where deer were present, he inferred that these spots had less fishing pressure, as other anglers hadn’t disturbed these areas.

If I saw 15 deer in a pocket, I’d say, ‘I’m getting bit here,’ Buchmann explained to Bassmaster.

On the first day, Buchmann relied on sightings of over 30 deer, including a 9-point buck, to guide his fishing. This method allowed him to weigh in 16 pounds, 7 ounces, taking the lead in the tournament.

Day-by-Day Success

On Day 2, Buchmann repeated his approach, spotting deer and catching two quality bass in one pocket. He explained his approach, saying, We can’t use (forward-facing sonar) this week, so you just have to fish where you think they’re gonna be.

Buchmann’s strategy involved more than deer watching. He was credited for his speed, mental toughness, and ability to avoid crowded fishing areas. He covered substantial parts of Norfork Lake using his trolling motor at high speed, targeting various areas with topwater baits and skipping jigs.

By the final day, he caught four fish from previously unfished locations. This relentless effort contributed to his overall victory, narrowly beating runner-up Cody Stahl by 1 pound, 14 ounces.

Looking Ahead

Buchmann earned $71,317 and an invitation to compete in the 2027 Bassmaster Classic at Lake Hartwell. With two Elite Qualifiers remaining, his unconventional method may become a trend among anglers aiming for similar success.

Buchmann’s story showcases a unique blend of creativity and dedication. It highlights the potential of alternative strategies in competitive fishing. As others watch deer for guidance, Buchmann’s win may inspire new approaches in the sport.
