Michigan’s largest newspaper, The Detroit Free Press, has announced its support for Democratic candidate Abdul El-Sayed in the upcoming Michigan Senate race, favoring him over Republican contender Mike Rogers.
The endorsement was published in an editorial on Sunday, urging voters to support El-Sayed in the election scheduled for November 3. The race holds significant weight as Democrats aim to gain control of the Senate, with this Michigan seat being crucial to their efforts.
The seat is presently held by Democratic Senator Gary Peters, and losing it would complicate the Democratic party’s strategy to regain Senate control. The newspaper has previously backed Democratic candidates in Michigan’s Senate elections.
In their editorial, The Detroit Free Press criticized a candidate they described as an extremist with an agenda not aligned with Michigan’s values. The paper clearly stated this candidate was not Abdul El-Sayed, indicating their strong disapproval of the opponent’s policies.
Attempts to contact both El-Sayed’s and Rogers’ campaigns for comments were made via email and online forms outside regular business hours on Monday.
This is an ongoing story, and further updates will follow as new information becomes available.
