Kentucky Trooper Killed During Traffic Stop, Suspect Captured

A traffic stop in Kentucky resulted in tragedy on Monday when a state trooper was shot and killed. This led to a statewide manhunt, ending with the apprehension of a suspect. Trooper Hayden Phillips, aged 30, was fatally shot on Interstate 65 in Warren County. He left behind a wife and three young sons.

“He was senselessly murdered,” stated U.S. Attorney Kyle Bumgarner during a news conference on Monday night. “We have a wife that expected her husband to come home. We have three little boys who don’t have a dad.”

Trooper Hayden Phillips, part of Kentucky State Police, was assigned to Post 3 in Bowling Green. He was a graduate of Cadet Class 103 and known as Unit 369. “Because he served us, because he served our community, because he wanted to keep each of us safe,” Bumgarner added. “He gave the ultimate sacrifice.”

Kentucky State Police Commissioner Col. Phillip Burnett Jr. expressed the commitment to pursuing justice for Phillips. “We will seek justice for Hayden,” Burnett declared. “We will not rest until this happens.”

Phillips’ sudden death was described as one of the most challenging moments for the agency. “His dedication to duty and commitment to the Commonwealth will never be forgotten,” Burnett stated, adding that their hearts break for Phillips’ family, loved ones, and colleagues amid this significant loss.

A trooper-involved shooting was initially reported by state police on northbound I-65 near the 38-mile marker. The public was alerted to watch for a bluish-gray Honda Civic with an Alabama tag, which was present during the incident. A Blue Alert identified Emonnie Branch as the person of interest.

Branch was taken into custody by Louisville Metro Police, leading to the cancellation of the alert. Branch faced charges for the murder of a first responder, with plans to return them to Warren County for state murder charges. Burnett mentioned Branch’s “cowardly actions.” The reasons for the traffic stop and whether Branch had a prior criminal history remain undisclosed.

“One of our own was gunned down and murdered on the side of the road,” Bumgarner remarked, committing the Justice Department’s support to Kentucky prosecutors and investigators. Burnett assured Phillips’ family that state police would remain by their side, saying, “You will not walk this path alone.”

State police paid tribute to Phillips, writing, “Rest Easy U/369. We have it from here.” Governor Andy Beshear acknowledged Phillips as a hero committed to protecting Kentucky and a devoted family man. He encouraged support for Phillips’ family during these challenging times.

State representatives expressed their condolences and prayers. Rep. Brett Guthrie thanked law enforcement for their rapid response and held the Phillips family and colleagues in his prayers. Rep. James Comer and Rep. Morgan McGarvey also extended their prayers and committed to remembering Phillips’ service.

Country singer Lee Greenwood shared his sorrow and support for the law enforcement community, committing to stand by the men and women in blue.
