Chargers Struggle Amidst Winless Start

The Los Angeles Chargers find themselves in a troubling position, remaining winless after three weeks of the NFL season. Two of these defeats have been by double digits to the Cardinals and Raiders. These teams combined for only six wins last season, making these losses even more concerning. The recent 24-16 defeat to the Bills stands out. Despite forcing five turnovers, which should have been enough to secure victory, the Chargers’ offense faltered.

In the fourth quarter, Los Angeles led 13-10. However, quarterback Justin Herbert failed to capitalize on opportunities, with the team settling for field goals. This allowed Buffalo to mount a comeback. Josh Allen, though inconsistent for much of the game, managed two scoring drives in the final quarter to clinch the win. Herbert’s performance was especially scrutinized, as he appeared inefficient and hesitant, a far cry from the franchise quarterback expectations and his salary.

Chargers head coach Jim Harbaugh spoke directly about Herbert’s performance, urging him to improve decision-making. “Be better. Be better,” Harbaugh emphasized, pointing to the drive this creates within their coaching staff, including offensive coordinator Mike McDaniel.

Herbert, selected sixth overall in the 2020 draft, quickly emerged as a top-tier quarterback. He claimed the Offensive Rookie of the Year title, followed by a stellar second season with 5,014 passing yards and 38 touchdowns. However, he has not repeated that success or advanced beyond the playoffs’ first round. Last season, despite a strong personal performance with 3,727 passing yards and 26 touchdowns, the Chargers achieved an 11-6 record but were eliminated in the Wild Card round.

This season has proven difficult for Herbert, who has thrown for 627 yards and three touchdowns against four interceptions in three games, with a completion rate at a career-low 59.1%. With the Chargers yet to secure a win, questions arise about Herbert’s ability to turn the season around.

The Chargers face a daunting upcoming schedule. They will travel to Seattle to play the Seahawks, followed by games against the Broncos, Chiefs, Rams, Texans, and Ravens.
