A 21-year-old student at the University of Georgia survived a fall from an eight-story window at an apartment near the campus. According to a police report, Kristin Sargent accidentally fell through a screen while dancing by an open window.
The incident occurred at the Rambler Athens apartment complex on West Broad Street on a Saturday evening. Witnesses stated that Sargent was dancing on a couch or air mattress when she fell. She landed near a pool on the building’s second-floor courtyard.
“We were dancing, and she just fell out of the window,” a friend of Sargent reported to emergency dispatchers after the fall.
Police arrived to find signs of the fall, including blood on a nearby metal bench’s cushion. One of the bench’s armrests had also broken off, likely indicating where Sargent struck it during the fall.
Lt. Katie Jenkins of the Athens-Clarke County Police Department noted that the bench likely helped to lessen the fall’s impact. Sargent was found to be alert and conscious, and the event is not considered a criminal matter.
Emergency responders quickly transported Sargent to a hospital for treatment, where police spoke with her and other witnesses. Police investigators took note of the incident’s accidental nature.
A representative from Rambler Athens informed that the apartment complex is reviewing the incident to understand what safety measures were in place. Attempts to reach them for further details on the window’s security features have yet to receive a response.
The University of Georgia, where Sargent is a student, also has not provided any comments regarding the incident.
