Russian Drone Strikes Intensify on Kyiv Amid Fears of Winter Campaign

Russian drone attacks have once again targeted Kyiv, heightening concerns of a combined missile and drone campaign by President Vladimir Putin as winter approaches. A drone struck a school in the Solomianskyi district of Kyiv, igniting a fire and causing damage. Thankfully, students and staff were in a bomb shelter at the time, preventing injuries. Additionally, two drones hit near the Southern Bridge supports, disrupting a crucial metro connection.

These recent attacks follow a large-scale drone and missile assault primarily aimed at Kyiv’s energy infrastructure. Oleksandr Kravchenko, Ukraine’s Economy Minister, warns of a challenging winter as the conflict stretches on since Russia’s invasion began on February 24, 2022. Mark Galeotti, host of “In Moscow’s Shadows” podcast, stated to Newsweek that the long-range campaign serves to cripple Ukraine’s economic resilience. Further, this could burden Europe with reconstruction responsibilities.

Ongoing Russian Strikes on Kyiv

Russian forces continue their assault on Kyiv, deploying fast, jet-powered drones that challenge Ukrainian defenses. An air alert lasted nearly 13 hours in the city, marking one of the longest since the conflict began. On a broader scale, attacks across Ukraine killed six individuals and wounded 38, according to Ukrainian officials.

Prime Minister Serhiy Koretskyi reported that Russia executed its largest strike package against energy targets since last April. The eRadar Telegram channel noted Moscow’s goal to escalate disruptions on power facilities, potentially disconnecting nuclear plants and causing mass outages.

Ukraine’s Counteroffensive Progress

Despite the aerial assaults, Ukraine’s counteroffensive, named “Operation Vivaldi,” has achieved notable progress. Brigadier General Andriy Biletsky reported advancements in the Lyman area of Donetsk, disrupting Russian efforts to capture strategic regions like Sloviansk and Kramatorsk.

Amid Russia’s limited territorial gains, a military analyst from Rybar claimed that Putin shifted tactics toward a widespread missile and drone initiative, hoping to break Ukraine’s spirit before winter negotiations. The Institute for the Study of War concurs, suggesting that demoralization tactics are at play to force Ukraine’s surrender.

Ukraine’s Retaliation Against Russia

Ukraine continues its counterattacks through drone and missile strikes aimed at debilitating Russia’s military infrastructure. The assault on oil and gas sites has resulted in gasoline shortages, evidencing the impact within Russia. A significant attack on Moscow occurred as voters prepared for elections, highlighting the growing tension.

ACLED, a conflict analysis firm, reported that Ukraine averaged three striking operations monthly against Russia’s fuel-based infrastructure. Ukrainian drones have targeted oil refineries and storage facilities across various regions, bringing the conflict’s effects closer to ordinary Russian citizens.
