U.S. Air Force Bombers Return Home Amid Terror Concerns in the U.K.

All U.S. Air Force bombers stationed in the United Kingdom have returned to their home bases in the United States. This decision follows a suspected terror plot that officials suggest may be linked to Iran targeting a U.S. military facility. Approximately twelve B-1 bombers have been removed from Royal Air Force (RAF) Station Fairford in Gloucestershire, England. The base serves as the only European forward operating location for American heavy bombers.

A U.S. official confirmed the redeployment, stating, “We can acknowledge now that all U.S. bombers that were deployed to RAF Fairford have re-deployed to their home stations in the United States.” Despite their relocation, the Pentagon assured that the bomber fleet remains capable of launching long-range strike missions from the continental United States when needed.

The Airmen that operate America’s bomber force, including B-1s, B-2s, and B-52s, remain ready to deliver precision global strike capabilities – including through operations that launch and recover from the continental United States – anywhere, anytime.

RAF Fairford plays a crucial role as a European base for heavy American strategic bombers, supporting U.S. military operations, including those targeting Iranian sites. Recently, U.K. officials discovered three suspicious vehicles near RAF Fairford containing fuel accelerants, though no improvised explosive devices were found. Authorities recovered a quantity of petrol and are investigating links to Iranian state proxies. A British-Iranian dual national faces charges of preparing terrorist acts.

Secretary of State Marco Rubio mentioned that the plot “clearly involves the hands of a foreign actor.” President Donald Trump remarked that the incident might have connections to Iran, with whom the United States has been at war since February.

In total, six individuals have been arrested concerning the incident, including five British nationals in their early 20s. However, police released all suspects on bail, with ongoing investigations. Officials stated, “I understand why this development will have come as a surprise to many, but I’d like to reiterate that it was an investigative decision, and one which is grounded in experience and careful consideration of policing powers.”
