Trump Urges Republicans to Embrace Mail Voting in Midterms

President Donald Trump is urging Republicans to vote by mail in the upcoming midterm elections, representing a significant shift from his previous stance on the issue. For years, Trump has criticized mail voting, arguing that it is susceptible to fraud.

In a recent post on Truth Social, Trump encouraged Republicans to utilize every available voting method to increase turnout for the November 3 election. “Republicans must WIN the 2026 Midterm Elections, and we must use every appropriate tool,” Trump wrote. “Whether you vote early, absentee, by mail, or in-person, we must ‘swamp’ the Radical Left Dumocrats with massive turnout!”

He also promoted a Republican voter outreach initiative, directing supporters to the “Swamp the Vote” website for information on how and where to vote.

Reversing Criticism of Mail-In Voting

This encouragement to vote by mail marks a departure from Trump’s previous criticisms. He has often described mail-in voting as insecure, despite regularly voting by mail himself in Florida.

Recently, Trump posted a video urging supporters to utilize multiple voting options, including mail voting. This message follows Trump’s criticism of the Supreme Court for striking down his administration’s efforts to restrict mail voting, which he previously labeled as corrupt and detrimental.

Pushing for the SAVE America Act

Trump has been pushing for the passage of the Safeguard American Voter Eligibility (SAVE) America Act. This legislation would require proof of U.S. citizenship to register for federal elections. Trump has attached the proposal to defense legislation, urged changes to the Senate rules, and highlighted the act on Truth Social.

Supporters of the act argue it would enhance election integrity, while critics say it might hinder eligible citizens’ ability to vote.

Trump’s Personal Use of Mail Voting

Despite his criticisms, Trump has frequently used mail voting. He mailed ballots in Florida’s 2020 primary and New York’s 2018 midterm. He also voted this way in the August 2026 Florida primary and a March 2026 special election.

Implications for Upcoming Elections

Trump’s call comes at a crucial time for Republicans, facing a tough political climate leading up to Election Day. Democrats have gained momentum in tight races, and Republicans worry Trump’s past mail voting criticisms could deter GOP voters.

According to the U.S. Election Assistance Commission, about one-third of ballots in the 2024 presidential election were cast by mail. Trump’s attempts to limit mail voting have encountered legal challenges, including a Supreme Court ruling against new restrictions.

Richard Pildes from New York University noted that Trump’s recent statements might indicate a strategic shift after failures to roll back mail voting.

Early and mail voting have started in some key states. If Democrats gain control, they could lead congressional committees and affect legislative priorities. The GOP aims to encourage early voting and mail voting this election cycle.

The longevity of Trump’s changed stance on mail voting remains uncertain as he balances previous criticisms with current political strategies.
