U.S. Officials Warn Against Travel to Djerba Amid Rising Threats

U.S. officials are advising Americans to avoid visiting the popular tourist destination, Djerba, due to increased threats linked to the anniversary of the October 7 terrorist attacks on Israel.

The U.S. Embassy in Tunisia alerted the public on Sunday, specifically cautioning about travel to Djerba, a major tourist island off Tunisia’s southern coast, renowned for its white-sand beaches and resorts. ‘Avoid travel to the island of Djerba on or around Oct. 7, 2026,’ stated the embassy.

Officials urged Americans to avoid crowds, remain vigilant, and stay aware of their surroundings. They recommended avoiding areas with a significant police presence, monitoring local media, and keeping a low profile.

The warning comes ahead of the third anniversary of the October 7, 2023 attacks, when Hamas terrorists conducted a major assault on Israel. The event resulted in over 1,200 deaths and thousands of injuries, sparking the Israel-Hamas war.

The attack and subsequent conflict led to a rise in antisemitism globally, which poses a potential risk in Djerba due to the island’s Jewish community. Djerba, a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 2023, has a history of Jewish settlement spanning nearly 2,000 years, as noted by the World Jewish Congress.

Every year, thousands of Jewish visitors from around the world come to Djerba to participate in the Lag B’Omer festival, which occurs between Passover and Shavuot. Historical accounts suggest a Jewish presence in Tunisia dates back to the Punic Empire and even earlier.

Currently, Tunisia is classified as ‘Level 2: Exercise Increased Caution,’ according to the State Department. The region experiences petty crime, especially in popular tourist spots, and violent crime is more common after dark. Officers advise against walking or driving at night.

Certain parts of Tunisia, particularly near the borders with Libya and Algeria, are rated at ‘Level 4: Do Not Travel’ due to terrorism concerns. Terrorist groups continue to plot possible attacks within Tunisia, with potential actions being sudden and without a clear target.

Djerba hosts a historic Jewish community and remains a favored destination for international tourists.
